Environment & Climate

We aim to build vibrant, thriving communities by revitalizing areas that have been impacted by disinvestment. Our key programs lead this work by strengthening climate and environmental resilience through nature-based solutions.

  • Resilient Algiers

The Resilient Algiers program is a community-led flood mitigation effort in the Cutoff/Lower Algiers neighborhoods of New Orleans. Building off of the momentum of the Hưng Đạo Heritage Garden , residents will co-develop and co-design green infrastructure projects which will help the community adapt for a more disaster-resilient future. The project will integrate creative placemaking  by integrating green infrastructure solutions within a community space, neighborhood park, and cultural heritage farm to provide both flood mitigation and environmental enhancement on a 10-acre parcel of land.

  • Waters By-You

Waters By-You is a coalition of partners coming together to develop community-based solutions for issues such as flooding and subsidence, pollution, environmental health, access to water, and quality of life.

Our goals include: create a community water plan for New Orleans East, bringing water into local classrooms, design and implement sustainable green infrastructure.

Our approach is to establish the community’s relationship with water, connect residents with their place within this environment, and co-create solutions toward a more sustainable and connected community. We work to build shared language, skills, and knowledge around this work of reimagining our relationship to water.

  • Farms By-You

A collaborative initiative between Sông CDC, Sprout, and local growers, this program uplifts BIPOC farmers as environmental stewards by combining training, technical assistance, and farmer-led knowledge. Participants address challenges like runoff, flooding, and climate impacts through conservation strategies such as riparian buffers, bioswales, and invasive species removal. Rooted in lived experience, this program supports sustainable practices while honoring farmers’ expertise and leadership in land care.
