Cultural Placemaking

Việt Nam in New Orleans Community Timeline

This project is a collaboration between Sông Community Development Corporation and Tulane University.

Việt Nam in New Orleans is dedicated to honoring and amplifying the stories of this community. Rooted in personal histories and narratives, this collection traces the community’s journey from 1975 until the present day, allowing us to follow the struggles, triumphs, and milestones of individual organizers, chefs, authors, politicians, fishermen, priests, and more. At the heart of this project is a desire to build collective archives in collaboration with the community, and to reflect the complexity and richness of Vietnamese life in New Orleans.

Sài Gòn Jazz Revival

Saigon Jazz Revival is a music project led by creative director Marion Hill that reimagines the vibrant Vietnamese jazz scene that once thrived in 1950s–1970s Sài Gòn. Blending traditional Vietnamese music, French chanson, Latin rhythms, and the influences of Black American jazz, this revival celebrates a rich and largely forgotten cultural legacy.

Produced in New Orleans, the project draws parallels between the musical histories of Sài Gòn and New Orleans, exploring themes of migration, memory, and resistance. With support from Sông CDC, the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund (NOTCF), and WWOZ, Saigon Jazz Revival brings together musicians and communities to honor the spirit of improvisation and cultural fusion, both past and present.
